Politics of Failure: For Boehner, Surprise Ending to a Wrenching Day - NYTimes.com

WASHINGTON — After two hours of impassioned debate, the Capitol was braced for the grand finale of Speaker John A. Boehner’s days of strong-arming members on the most important vote of his Congressional career. Suddenly, with no warning and just minutes from a vote Thursday evening, the conversation on the House floor turned to naming post offices.

Because this is the most important piece of business they have.  Who cares about jobs or the economy?  It's clear the Republican'ts don't.

Thus began the great pizza seduction. One after another, recalcitrant Republicans were marched into Mr. Boehner’s office, where he begged, implored and, when that failed, berated them in a desperate effort to win support for his proposal to resolve the debt crisis.

Representative Kevin McCarthy, the House whip, bought a pile of pizzas, and asked those members who were against the bill to come on over for a slice, and some haranguing.

Pizza should have totally worked.

Years from now the failure to raise the debt limit will be laid at at Boehner's feet. But in fact his whole party is to blame. They lined themselves up behind the Tea Party in order to achieve electoral gains in the 2010 election, and in doing so they grabbed a tiger by the tail. The fact is, there are now three parties in U.S. politics, the Democrats, the GOP, and the Tea Party. Ostensibly within the Republican party, the Tea Party cannot be controlled by the old line GOP (Boehnoer et al). The only hope for legislation to stave off default now will require the combined votes of Democrats and moderate Republicans, and what will that mean for the GOP? That the remaining moderate Republicans will be purged? Or that the GOP will withdraw its support for the Tea Party. Clearly the two can't coexist in a fashion that permits them to govern.

The GOP is tearing itself up, which would be fine with me, except they're going to tear up our futures in the process.

It;s not surprising they turned to post offices. They already extended the committee to plan for Reagan's 100th birthday last April. Reagan's 100th birthday was last February.

Republicans just love to create Fake crisis. This should just be about paying our debt and moving on. Republicans are desperately trying to rewrite a plan, twisting arms to try and get votes, just wasting time and money (fiscally responsible?). If we go into default it will be self inflicted. If they were so concern they would save $4T by just getting rid of Bush Tax Cut going back to Clinton's tax rate. So, if we go into default we create a larger bill and must pay/spend more money? Their logic is plain ludicrous. They continue to lie and say they are fiscally resonsible as they create more debt. Go figure.

Spend Time On: writing bills that would create jobs instead of cutting jobs Or just go back and vote YES for these bills instead of against them: An American jobs effort to end government contracts rewarding corporations that ship American jobs overseas; Currency Reform for Fair Trade Act to provide our government with effective tools to address unfair currency manipulation by countries like China, which could help create 1 million American manufacturing jobs by leveling the international playing field for American workers and businesses. American Jobs Matter Act – to give preference in federal contracts to U.S. manufacturers that create jobs here at home.

Stay Away From: Fake Crisis, protecting taxpayer subsidies for Big Oil and speculators driving up gasoline prices, and against gasoline anti-price gouging legislation for consumers; providing more tax cuts for millionaires, and protect tax breaks for corporations shipping jobs overseas; strengthening the role of special interests in our elections (by ending the Presidential Election fund that promotes small campaign donations) and against disclosure of foreign countries, companies, or individuals donating to presidential campaigns; Anti-Abortion bills. These things republicans are voting on Won't Balance the Budget or Create Jobs that they Promised.

What fake crisis, after all the dilemma is fully owned by the Democratic Party.

btw a bill was passed early this week and the senate dems balked on it.

So is this like when the republicans were saying the Dems could not pass bills out of the Senate while holding a super majority (which really neber was the case anyway)?? Kinda ironic if you ask me. Boehner has a huge majority in the House and can't move his bill... Karma?

And the rethuglicons might have come through on their big promise--maybe a pizza delivery job was created under their leadership?!

Inadvertently of course, since Boehner and the Baggers thought they controlled the world...until now.

Where are the jobs, Jobs, JOBS you campaigned on John Boehner and company?????

Where's your fiscal responsibility (especially since President Obama offered a plan that was MORE fiscally responsible than anything the Reich Wing has produced)?????

I am almost to the point that I would do anything to avoid looking like the world's laughingstock. We are already stereotyped to be spoiled and greedy. Now, we need to add irresponsible, on top of it?

Awwww, come ON, already! Come up with a viable compromise that taxes fairly, removes subsidies to private businesses, and pulls solid jobs back in America. How freaking hard can that possibly be? Remove that damned rider on the bills, the one that keeps sneaking this parasitic behavior in under the radar!

You know, really, I'm tired of hearing that it's "Both Parties included." It's not both parties included, it's the Republican Party. We could have had a bill signed last week that would have reduced the deficit by $4 trillion over the next decade, That was the President's plan. Why did it fail? Because the Republican Party refuses to raise taxes on the wealthiest Americans by letting the Bush tax cuts lapse. Check out this interview with Bruce Bartlett, former policy adviser to President Reagan and undersecretary of the Treasury for George H.W. Bush. Bartlett lays the blame for this impending disaster--rightly so--on his own party.

The repubs will do everything to destroy the economy because they think that is the only thing that will get them elected after they tried to end soc sec, medicare and medicaid with the ryan sham.

The rest of the world knows that will lead to a world depression. So repubs, with most of america blaming you for this as well as the rest of the world blaming you for this attempt at world economic collapse how do you think you are going to do in the 2012 election????? Oh and add in to the mix that the 5 rightwingers on the supreme court have allowed unlimited corporate and foreign money to flood our elections, you repubs and tea baggers are headed for a political mass extinction event.

Question? Why do we have to borrow an additional 2.4 trillion, if we are cutting 2.4 trillion from the budget? If they cut 2.4 trillion, we would not need to borrow the money. Yes I know, it is "complicated". Having been on the hill a few times I know what this means. Smoke and mirrors. All of our leaders have failed us, and I can no longer applaud the idiocy of any party. We, the taxpayers, are the only ones who will be paying the price. Please keep this in mind when contacting DC. Everyone on "the hill" is counting on you to take one side or the other, simply to avoid looking closely at what is really going on.

It's not smoke and mirrors. It's called math and bookkeeping. The cash flow doesn't necessarily line up with the budget cuts and the payment cycles. For all the Republican lectures about small businesses, you'd think Teabaggers would understand what is a common problem for business owners. Remember? Just a few months ago, when the Fox World was all abuzz about Obama's policies shutting off credit? Credit that businesses needed to meet expenses? Expenses like payroll?
