Bank of America staffers in San Francisco shuttered the doors of their branch this week when a group of women aged 69 to 82, bearing signs in solidarity with Occupy Wall Street and calling themselves the “wild old women,” approached the building in walkers and wheelchairs to protest high fees, low taxes on banks and foreclosures. No arrests were reported. —ARK

CBS San Francisco:
Tita Caldwell, 80, who led the charge of women with walkers and wheelchairs, said that they’re demanding the bank lower fees, pay higher taxes, and stop foreclosing on, and evicting, homeowners.
”We’re upset about what the banks are doing, particularly in our neighborhood and neighboring areas, in evicting people and foreclosing on their homes,” said Caldwell. “We’re upset because the banks are raising their rates because it really affects seniors who are on a fixed income.”

We 'baby boomers' learned early, protests work! lol It was the music Erich...listen to it and learn and that's Way cool!

As a little old lady of 65, I am thrilled to see these women protesting. We all lived through the 60's and 70's and know that people have much more power to change things, than we give ourselves credit for. Power to the people!

(grin)
They might have something here. I picture little old ladies shaking their finger (doesn't matter to me WHICH finger) in the faces of sleek and arrogant young investment bankers and hedge fund managers...and DEMANDING that they stop ripping people off. Saying things like:
"No need to help me across the street there SONNY...just STOP stealing my MONEY!"
"Do you kiss your Grandmother with that mouth?"
"When was the last time you donated to charity?"
"When was the last time you volunteered in your community?"
"When was the last time you visited YOUR Grandmother?"
"Now here...sign this petition to change the laws on investment bankers and hedge fund managers...and then get yer ass back to work!"
I intend to twack little twerps like this with my broom as soon as I can claim senility and get away with it...
lol...

I plan on being armed with a cane, with which to, whack em on the shins, "outta the way sonny".

Screw Bank of America--these banksters should be in jail!

I deal with B of A every day. The workers are incompetent, the system by which they operate is faulty and it's my opinion those at the top are liars and thieves.

I'd say it's an established fact. We don't call 'em "banksters" because it's cute.

I drive and do business in San Francisco fairly regularly, and the traffic down town frays even young nerves. When I think of the extra effort required for these silver haired patriots to gather down town in a city like San Francisco, I just feel an urge to stand up and salute.

These ladies are heroes. Just verifies you don't need camo to be one!
And who better, to send that message home? Our older generation still have the frugality ingrained in them by the Great Depression. They know what it was like then, and can see the writing on the wall (pun intended) this time, too.
WALK ON, grannies!! This veteran is with you!!

I want to be that cool when I am 80!
I want to be that cool now. Go for it, ladies. I am amazed BoFa did not have cops come and pepper spray the group in the eyes with the excuse they thought themselves in danger from these elderly citizens. One cop said of the woman he tackled to the ground, forced her mouth open and doused her with pepper spray, "I could tell by the look in her eyes she was about to bop me with her walking cane."

While I hate B of A, why don't these grannies just close their accounts and open them anew at a credit union, or a bank that doesn't charge? That's the only real revenge against a giant bank like B of A.
- 7 votes
Wrong. The publicity was extremely valuable to the issues involved. More so than closing a dozen or so accounts.
- 15 votes
Cob, I believe the article mentions that this is the bank closest to the senior home these folks live in. When I closed my B of A account and moved to a credit union, what I gave up was convenience of branches and ATMs I could easily get to. Now, my closest ATM is in Target stores and is operated by Chase bank. The closest branch office is more than 20 miles away from me. I don't regret what I did for a moment. I'm also only 54 and have my own car. I also don't have to consider attempting public transport with a walker or a wheelchair or an oxygen tank. And to echo Oiled Pelican, do you think we'd be having this discussion if these women hadn't created the visual for the nightly news? How many stories have you seen since we all moved our accounts about what it did to the banks?

Finally, an "occupy" that I can believe in!
- 6 votes
Finally? You don't see any other Occupy that you believe in?
Open your eyes and look around you. They all are out there for you as well as for me and the rest of us who are overworked, underpaid, fighting just to feed our families, trying to get a college education to improve their lives, trying to hold onto their homes in the face of illegal foreclosures, protesting the inequality of the tax laws, trying to be considered real human beings, even if you are black, gay, Mormon, or anything that isn't considered appropriate to the 1% who are in control of our financial futures.
I can't believe you can only believe in little, old ladies standing up for the rights of all. I applaud them and hope that many, many more of we "old folk" get out there and let them know how ashamed we are of their greed and ugliness.

Why didn't the major media networks or any network cover this story? This was interesting, important, funny and wonderful. Age isn't a barrier in speaking our views and exercising our freedom of speech.
Great job ladies!

I keep reading where the mainstream media are all socialist front groups. Are you saying that they are really corporate shills and are just promoting the capitalist agenda? Who knew? (Well, we know it wasn't FOX viewers - they are proven to be getting dumber by the day.)
- 20 votes
Well, they are owned and controlled by the same 1%. Some are less biased than others, although lately the non-biased seem to be unwilling to ask tough questions of anyone. They seem to be going for "pure reporting". This is fine when reporting but not when interviewing.

I think they all have varying amounts of 'freedom' granted by their corporate masters, but ultimately are they going to print something that might cost them personal money? Probably not.

Why does the media deserve credit for a heinous act committed by somebody else?
- 1 vote
Well now that we've found their vulnerable spot, it's time to flood them with more of the same. They know that no amount of money spent on PR is going to make arrestingor mistreating the elderly an acceptable practice. Just make sure to keep the cameras rolling, it's not decency keeping them subdued but fear of public outcry.

FROM THE ARTICLE:
The women waved signs, but didn’t march or chant, with one woman on supplemental oxygen adding that the group was too old for that.
I wonder what would happen if they set up their walkers and wheelchairs in front of bank entranceways.
Would cops in riot gear, who work for the banks, throw them to the ground and kick the living sh*t out of them, like they do with other peaceful protestors?
It actually wouldn't surprise me. The banker-loving cops seem sickeningly aroused by doing that kind of thing.
- 15 votes
You mean if they blocked an exit and made it dangerous in case of a fire inside the building? Or if they blocked an entrance way to a legal business and interfered with that businesses ability to conduct their business? I would hope that the Police would peaceably move them to a public area where they could exercise their right to protest. I would guess that the police would use the force equal to the danger posed by the protestors.

fernando:
You mean if they blocked an exit and made it dangerous in case of a fire inside the building?
Yes.
In which case, the bank's responsibility would be to evacuate the building and close up shop.
Works for me.
Also, there are so many WAY more dangerous things going on in banks, that fire is the least dangrous -- it might actually be a good way to stop the other dangers from occurring.
Or if they blocked an entrance way to a legal business and interfered with that businesses ability to conduct their business?
When did what goes on in banks suddenly become legal?
You don't know that the world's banking system is a Ponzi scheme and that the AG of the US refuses to seriously prosecute banking fraud at the behest of BushBama, because, if he did prosecute the rampant banking fraud inherent in the US, the rest of the world would see the fraud and this would, in turn, cause a "run" on the nation's banks?
More generally, any argument that banks should remain open because they are legal businesses, imho, is a non-starter.
I would hope that the Police would peaceably move them to a public area where they could exercise their right to protest.
Me too, But police seldom behave in peacable ways when they are under teh employ of their banking masters.
. I would guess that the police would use the force equal to the danger posed by the protestors.
Their argument is that they do.
The problem is, they include among the "dangers" posed by protestors the potential for others to copy them.
This means that a reasonable level of force has to include the message that others had better not copy them -- hence the mindless skull-splitting of unarmed and peaceful demonstrators.

Funny how the caring conservatives never have a problem with the protestors that block entrances to women's health clinics and terrorize the women entering.
It's only the protestors they DISAGREE WITH who pose a danger to the fire code or the legal right of a business to conduct...ya know...their business.
- 16 votes
I am actually not a Conservative. I disagree with anyone stopping anyone from conducting their legal business. I do not have a problem with protesting until you stop everyone else from going about their day.

The women would only have been holding signs and not marching or blocking the entrance - the bank manager decided to close shop and stop others from entering.

Ya, we know, but my response was to the question posed in #11
I wonder what would happen if they set up their walkers and wheelchairs in front of bank entranceways.
Would cops in riot gear, who work for the banks, throw them to the ground and kick the living sh*t out of them, like they do with other peaceful protestors?
- 3 votes
It never ceases to amaze me that people expect protestors to play nice and not bother anyone. Certainly not businesses! How quickly these folks have forgotten what democracy and free speech are to acquire and maintain - it's messy. Want things tidy? Want powers that be to keep citizens in line lest the world be less tidy? Move to China. Better yet, move to North Korea where even the emotions you express publicly are controlled by the state.
- 3 votes
Shebow:, and it never ceases to amaze me that people are willing to accept that, during these "peaceful" protests, it is acceptable to smash store windows and gut businesses, flip cars and set them on fire, for fun and games and not get a legitmate Law Enforcement response. Nobody, and in particular Law Enforcement has any problems with legal and peaceful protests but when the fire bombs or bricks start flying expect a response that is in direct realationship with the violence.
What you're describing are criminal acts, not peaceful protest. I am watching law enforcement and local governments having plenty of problems with peaceful protest. I'm not seeing smashed store windows, gutted businesses, flipped cars, burning cars, etc on my news during the Occupy protests. But I have witnessed law enforcement, at the behest of the local governments, pepper spray people who were sitting perfectly still, saying words that agitated the police until they began to treat American citizens as enemy combatants in a war.

The absolute proof that folks who actually lived thru the "Great Depression" and saw the rebuilding and constant growth of the United States as a nation thru the 20th century know what works. The righties would never be able to do what they are doing if more of them were still here.
Everybody needs to start channeling Grandma. All the things the rightwing are railing against and fighting to destroy are the very things that made us that "Shining city on a hill" Ronnie spoke of.

As they arrived, Bank of America closed and locked its doors, to the surprise and delight of the elderly protestors, who said that they had no intention of storming the bank.
The women waved signs, but didn’t march or chant, with one woman on supplemental oxygen adding that the group was too old for that.
Those bankers must have been feeling guilty or something.

Anyone who works for BofA should feel guilty. They make their money out of screwing people over.

If the ladies, and old guys too, really want to make an impact they might consider hitting all B of A branches at the same time in SF or any other city with lots of branches. They could tie up significant numbers of cops and cause all sorts of mischief to hurt B of A.
I can just see the evening news footage of tough guy cops macing groups of old folks or clubbing them to the ground on behalf of thieving banks. Next thing you know cities would find themselves with lots of older perps using canes, walkers and in wheel chairs, with heart conditions or other serious ailments requiring meds and all telling them and the banks to shove it. The cost of medical care alone might make most cities pause.
- 7 votes
I would love to get out and Occupy, but my sons refuse to go with me. Guess I will just have to run my scooter down to the city center park alone.
Of course, part of the problem is that I live in a pretty nice city and don't have anything to do with banks or Republicans or the 1%.
Oh, well.

Quote from story: “We’re upset because the banks are raising their rates because it really affects seniors who are on a fixed income.”
Hell, I'm 87 so I figure that, even though I'm a man, not a Grannie, that I should at least let our presence be felt there since I handle the finances here. In a word our bargain, put in place with my bride of 46 (that's 1946) was that, I would make it, and she would spend it and it has worked out famously for us. I figure that BOA is in a downward fight with Wells Fargo as to which of them can screw over the seniors the most and get away with it. WF, who will lose our accounts as fast as I can move them, Just reduce their interest on our saving/checking from .05% to .03%. That's 3/100ths of a single percent here folks. If I want to borrow money however, their beginning rate stands at 5.25%. The banks also know that the greatest level of disposable income rests in the hands of the seniors who have diligently saved over all of these years and which they in collusion with the other major banks have taken dead aim at stripping us of. We are in the process of clearing whatever accounts we have there out and will go with local banks and not the big box ones.

Little Old Ladies: Is there anything they can't do?
The younger generations could learn something from the folks who led the way.
- 12 votes
Um.. I think they did.
Remember, at one time, the older generation was regarded the way that our younger generations are. At one time, these elderly women were probably "degenerate, dirty hippies" too.

Maybe, but they probably weren't blogging about their protests on their iPad, while sipping a Starbucks, while camping in a $750 tent.

But maybe they were! Little old ladies are awesome! We should listen to our elderly.
